Chart Check: Kylie Minogue’s ‘Tension’ Is the Week’s Top-Selling New Album & Her Biggest Billboard 200 Opening in Nearly 20 Years

Published: Wednesday 4th Oct 2023 by Rashad

Billboard has finally broken the tension for anxious Kylie Minogue fans on the edge of their seats awaiting news about the first-week commercial performance of the Pop royal’s latest album.

Details inside.

Kylie Minogue’s ‘Tension’

First-Week Sales (SPS):  24,500 units

First-Week Sales (Pure): 19,500 units

Billboard 200 Debut:  #21

Few can say they’re having a better year than Kylie.

As if boasting yet another UK #1 smash with her latest album, ‘Tension,’ wasn’t enough to boast, the September 22-released project – led by the gargantuan ‘Padam Padam‘ – is seeing its success narrative extended to American shores.

Review of the refreshed Billboard 200 sees the 11-track project planted at #21 thanks to total sales of 24,500 equivalent album units in the U.S.

That figure – which is a combination of the performance of the LP’s 2 deluxe editions as well as 15 physical formats (cassettes, vinyl, CDs) and digital versions – marks the biggest week she’s landed Stateside in nearly 20 years following 2004’s ‘Body Language‘ opening to the tune of 43,500 sold.

Of the 24,500 units shifted, nearly 19,500 of those were pure (digital and physical) – making it the best-selling new album of the week (among all artists). The feat sees her outpace the pure sales of new projects like Doja Cat’s ‘Scarlet,’ Zach Bryan‘s ‘Boys of Faith,’ and Lil Tecca‘s ‘TEC‘ as well as the week’s #1 album Rod Wave‘s ‘Nostalgia.’

The #21 opening of ‘Tension’ not only marks Minogue’s highest Billboard 200 placement since ‘Aprodite‘ cracked the top 20 in 2020, but it’s her overall fifth top 40 hit on the hitlist following 2002’s ‘Fever‘ (#3 peak), 2010’s ‘Aphrodite‘ (#19 peak), 2014’s ‘Kiss Me Once‘ (#31 peak), and 2020’s ‘Disco‘ (#26 peak).

Doja has the biggest song in the world right now. Your point?

      • Pink Friday October 4, 2023

Doja is no Nicki Minaj. Cardi can’t even sell 375k pure sales lol.

    • Alien Superstar October 4, 2023

Not by pure sales tho lol

      • Alien Superstar October 4, 2023

  13. Who’s Zoomin’ Who? October 5, 2023

She has a huge hit in 2001 and 1988 in US. Too bad that she’s not as huge as Madonna Pink, Xtina or Britney in US.

  14. Normani Stan October 5, 2023

She’s cute and lovely. Was she in spice girls band before? The one that sing “If you wanna be my lover, you gonna get down with my friends”. lol 😂

  15. George T October 5, 2023

KYLIE deserves all this and more!

  16. Fitsy October 6, 2023

LOL number 21???? Hun shes a flop! 20+ variations got her a number 1 in the UK from about 500 fans. The US clearly doesnt like her. Shes mediocre at best. The album will nosedive without gimmicks to support it. Madonna’s latest album is still in the top 100 album chart in the US & UK after 43 weeks! Thats longer than any studio album of kylies since 2003. Stop blowing smoke. She’s living on fumes and this album is yet more basic, soulless autotuned pop with tacky visuals to boot. She is NO Madonna. Get over it

    • Gaga Stan October 6, 2023

Why are you angry? Who hurt you? You are just a basic hater with no life. Go get a a job. Kylie is winning.

    • Edwar October 8, 2023

      tension isnt her best…
but Kylie over-all is no slouch
but as far as Tension goes its just “OK”
i thought did was much better!

  17. Edwar October 8, 2023

    Tension is over-rated
its a good album but not better than Disco
and really only has 4 good songs on it…
as a matter of fact a lot of the songs on tension sound
like demo’s and out-takes from the disco album that were just polished up a bit!
hopefully is she tours this album she will rely more heavily on the material from disco than this album.
